I had a bit of a mishap on the weekend which resulted in the demise of my beloved Canon 1D s MK3.
We have been through a lot together and let me tell you, this camera has been put through its paces like none other and has come up trumps every time. It has carried on shooting in the wettest of wet conditions, in the dustiest of dusty and in the most humid conditions on the planet and it never ever let me down.
The demise of my good and reliable mate now paves the way for a new adventure with who knows which team and it is indeed exciting times for anyone looking at acquiring a camera. The specs on the new Nikons are impressive to say the least, but I have had such a good run out of my Canon I will for sure be waiting to see what Canon have up their sleeve as I am sure an announcement is imminent off the back of the release of the new Nikon.
I have never owned a bit of kit like the 1Ds that so easily becomes an extension of me.
A big thanks to some wonderful people for their support through this trying time: the lovely Peta North from Camera Solutions and to Flemming Bo Jensen for allowing me to use his kit today for a commercial shoot….thanks troops!
So, for a little while my posting might be a little slow as I assess the way fwd for my camera kit for the future, so bare with me.
As I assess the way fwd for myself, I will post the thought process for those who are interested as I know for sure that there are many of you out there are also wondering…’where to from here’!

Hope your not planning on a Nikon. Amazon are saying December delivery.
What happened to this one ??
I am not planning on anything at the moment Merv apart from waiting to see what happens in the next few weeks.
Got some water in the camera mate and she died…very sad!
Good opportunity to pull it apart and see how it works.
Christian reckons I should frame it and I might just do that i reckon…!
Didn’t you drop it? Insurance?
I think I am covered in any case Jamie!
So sorry your Canon-baby died, but she did perform extraordinarily well in some tough conditions for years and years. Maybe diving was just not her thing. And she died a fine although untimely death. Canon should pay you to road test the 1D series I reckon.
You can use my 5D as long as you want while I’m here – I’m using the Fuji anyway!
Yep she was a great machine there Flembot and she shone where others dared to show their face!
Sorry to hear about that… I hear the 5DmkIII should be coming out any day now (though I’ve been hearing that for the past year). Ever considered medium format?
Hi Armand, from what I have seen of medium format they are troublesome and very poor if not unusable in low light, so that is not for me!
Sad, sad news. Thought about an aerial burial? They are pretty popular these days.
My 5DmkII took a nice tumble of a sandstone boulder the other week. Still works but has a beautiful crack in the frame where the flash would normally sit.
Good luck with the hunt for a new camera.
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone!
I agree with your comments totally Tim in that it is going to take a lot to prise me away from Canon as my 1Ds is by far one of the best purchases of my life and whats more it has been life changing as well!
The things that I have done and the people I have met through the purchase of that camera have been extraordinary and I know that the journey has only just begun!
Some interesting times ahead working out what the next play will be and I will for sure keep up posts about the thought process going into those decisions.
Oh no – not good news to hear at all Mark. It’s a real shattering moment when it happens and then after the disappointment and shock you just feel naked without it !
I am sure something will come along again soon.
Best of luck,
Tone
“…a bit of a mishap…” doesn’t tell me much. Did you drop it off the back of the boat; run over it with the car; or, accidentally hit it with a hammer? We like to know these things.
Oh No not the 1D and a watery grave.
is he going to jump ship into the N mob?
is he going to wait for the next big Canon and at least get some use from his old and loved lenses?
maybe a medium format? Naa cant see that
hang on what about one of these new mirror less we hear great things from Christian
just have to be patient I guess and all will be revealed
I thought our cameras were indestructible Mark! Very sad news indeed, I must admit I think I would actually be heartbroken if I killed my camera.
Jamie
Bad luck mate but you know what they say ‘what doesn’t kill you…..’, ‘onwards and upwards’, ‘grass is greener’…..’birds of a feather’…..er…..ok, you get the drift. Be interested to see which way to go with the purchase so keep us updated and all the best with it.
AB
Hey Mark, sorry to hear that buddy… I’m sure it will all work out for you in the end
I had a pair of Nikon film cameras that refused to die and actually seemed to thrive on salt-spray! I think Canon and Nikon are level pegging these days and I am certainly happy with Canon.
Changing horses these days involves quite a bit, lenses & accessories, not to mention file types and software etc. Bit more than meets the eye!
Not good Mark.
Good luck in your quest to find a replacement!
cheers
Garry
I think I have the plan already Garry!
5D mk2 as an interim so I can bide my time to see what comes out from Canon.
Oh poor Marky Mark, although maybe I shouldn’t say poor Mark because YEH a good opportunity to get a new camera, besides that’s what you have insurance for, a camera is replaceable after all and how exciting to get a new one. I’d be saying “yeh for me.”
Hey Andrea…it is still a very sad time for me as that camera and I have done some pretty cool stuff together!
I will be the owner of a 5D Mk 2 soon as an interim machine whilst I wait for the lead up to ‘whats next’!
Doh! I remember your 1Ds rolling off the table on True North a couple of Australia days ago, and it survived. Some great pro bodies just released, and some to still come. I recently ordered a D4, and am now waiting with anticipation
good luck with you search.
Hi Graham, yes the 1Ds proved itself on many times as being up to the task for sure. Great news on your D4 purchase…I certainly rate what I have read about that machine!
That’s very sad Mark, but as someone else said it is a good opportunity. a forced upgrade. It is a good time to upgrade with some great new cameras coming out. I can’t see you coming over to the N-side – you have too much invested in lenses, so your plan with the 5D Mk2 makes a lot of sense as an interim measure.
Yes I agree Ian…it is pretty obvious the 5Dmk2 is the best plan for the short term eh!
Just hope that Canon deliver what you want before you get the 5D MK2 wet!
Cheeky…cheeky there Ian!
Hey Mark
Sad news about the camera…. I missed how you did it… was it dropped in the drink or did it cop a big wave?
So how are you going to manage while you assess the camera market? You borrowing one of CF’s hand-me-downs?
Good luck in your selection. I hope you have a new love of your life soon.
Brent
Hi Brent,
Thanks for the condolences mate!
I have ordered a 5Dmk2 to get me by and then will sit tight and wait for all the new releases over the next few months as I think it will be quite exciting watching what is coming out.
A mate of mine has an Ikelite housing for a 5D mk2 and my intention is to get one of those dedicated to the 5Dmk2 and then see which way I go for my landscape camera.
Fun time to be in the market for cameras I reckon!
Shame to see the old girl go, I remember when you bought it from Fletch. A 5D mk2 will suit you well, I upgraded 6 months after Karijini, but I need to get on the blogs again.
gidday Matt. new camera is here today so that is waycool!
Get a blogging son!
